What Happens If You Ignore A Toothache?

Woman With A ToothacheNever Ignore A Toothache!

When a tooth becomes infected, it may start with a dull ache or occasional sharp pain. It can be tempting to brush it off, especially if the discomfort fades. However, a toothache doesn’t resolve on its own, and delaying treatment can lead to serious complications.

How Does a Tooth Infection Start?

Tooth infections usually begin when bacteria enter the pulp—the soft inner tissue of the tooth containing nerves and blood vessels. This can happen due to deep decay, a crack or chip in the tooth, trauma, or even multiple dental procedures. Once bacteria reach the pulp, the tissue can become inflamed or die, creating a perfect environment for infection to grow.

What Are the Symptoms?

Early signs of infection may include pressure, sensitivity to heat or cold, or swelling of the gums near the affected tooth. As the infection worsens, you may experience intense pain, swelling in the face or neck, or the appearance of a pimple-like bump on the gum (an abscess). In some cases, the tooth may change color or begin to feel loose.

What Happens if a Toothache is Left Untreated?

If an infected tooth is left untreated, the consequences can be severe. The infection can spread beyond the tooth and into the surrounding bone, weakening the structures that support your teeth. At that point, treatment becomes more complex and costly; instead of a root canal and crown, it may require tooth replacement options such as implants or bridges.

How Can an Endodontist Help?

Endodontists specialize in treating issues inside the tooth, including infections! The most common solution is root canal therapy—a procedure that removes the infected pulp, cleans the inside of the tooth, and seals it to prevent reinfection. The treatment is highly successful and helps preserve your natural tooth.

Why Early Treatment Matters

Prompt treatment not only relieves pain but also prevents the spread of infection and potential damage to nearby teeth or tissues. If you notice any persistent discomfort, swelling, or other signs of a problem, don’t wait. Seeing an endodontist early can save your tooth!
