When You Should Choose An Endodontist
And why can’t I see my regular dentist?
If you have a toothache and need a root canal, then you have some options available to you. You might receive treatment at your regular dentist’s office, or they may recommend a referral to see an endodontist.
Endodontists are dental specialists who have received 2-3 years of additional training. Their focus is primarily on treating the inside of the tooth, which consists of blood vessels, nerves, and connective tissue that’s collectively called the “pulp.” When they receive a referral, it can be disappointing for patients to hear they need to visit an unfamiliar office. However, it’s often the best choice when a root canal is necessary.
Many general dentists have experience performing root canals (especially if they often treat dental emergencies). And if you are comfortable and confident in your general dentist, then you should absolutely listen to their advice and opinion about your treatment options. We would never disparage a general dentist or their abilities. Instead, we are here as their resource and partner, often working together in a cooperative fashion!
With all that said, many dentists choose not to perform root canals for various reasons. The extra complexity often means that appointments are longer than they’re accustomed to. Additionally, when patients come to a dentist with a toothache, it can be a stressful situation. Referring to a specialist helps to ensure optimal outcomes for their patients.
If you, a friend, or family member is experiencing a toothache (or have already received a diagnosis and need a root canal), please don’t hesitate to contact our office. We will be happy to assist you in scheduling an appointment for treatment or consultation.
